With all due respect, why should they? What is in it for them?
I am not being facetious. You probably have a very good reason for doing the research. If you have a business of your own then it will definitely pay to walk into each business and introduce yourself. Give each owner (try to see the owner, not an employee) an incentive to do the research. Perhaps you could feature his business on you website?
The owner’s time is valuable. Treat him with respect and you should have no problem getting what you want.

Since time is a rare commodity to most small businesses owners, I would say that your best approach is ask for their help honestly and offer to trade/share information with them. As a business person, I get many solicitations for marketing research and nearly all are turned down. Be up front and try to help them if you can and I think you will get some positive responses. Just ask the business owner nicely.

U need to make ur research worth it n interesting so that buisness can do the research. Have u done this research before on other buisnesses or is it ur 1st time? If u have done this befor show them fact n testimonials from the other buisness proven that ur research is worth it. N if its your 1stt time well u need to really come up on how to get them to paprticiapte because many buisness dont wanna get into something gthey dont know anything about..GOOD LUCK!

One thing I have found successful is offering them access to the findings of the research. If this alone is not enough, think about offering them the ability to add one question of interest to them to the survey.
